Big news out of Richmond
A proposal to legalize adult-use cannabis sales in Virginia has officially cleared the Virginia Senate Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee in a narrow 8–7 party-line vote.
What does the bill propose?
If fully passed and implemented, regulated adult-use cannabis sales would begin January 1, 2027.
Important information to know:
• This vote does NOT legalize sales yet — it only moves the bill forward
• The proposal must still pass the full Virginia Senate and House
• The Governor would need to sign it into law
• Until then, no licensed adult-use retail market exists in Virginia
Why this matters:
Legal, regulated sales help:
Create consumer safety standards
Reduce the illicit market
Generate tax revenue for public programs
Expand education, harm reduction, and equity opportunities
This is progress, but there is still work to do. Education, advocacy, and community voices matter now more than ever.
Stay informed. Stay involved. And let your representatives know what responsible cannabis policy looks like.
